This knitted cowl pattern recalls the mountains of California’s Coast and the Pacific Ocean waves. It's knit in the round from the bottom up and includes a minimal amount of colorwork, ideal for a new knitter or beginner knitter. Using a fingering weight sock kit, this pattern's great for stashbusting & gift knitting.

This patterns also includes an elegant slipped stitch pattern, reminiscent of the ocean waves, that is quite easy to work and remember (hello TV knitting).

I recommend using two yarns with high contrast to get the best out of the pattern. This pattern is written for fingering weight yarn, but you will also find a chart with cast-on numbers to make this pattern in a different gauge/yarn weight, along with tips to accommodate a different row gauge.

This pattern was professionally tech edited in 2021.

Level = Curious beginner

Notions you need to know: Casting on, knitting and purling, placing markers, basic colorwork, slipping stitches, binding off.

GAUGE

26 stitches and 36 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette on size US 2 (2.75 mm) needles

Gauge is not crucial for this project. However, major discrepancy might result in a different size and yardage requirement. If you can’t achieve the recommended gauge, consult the table at the end of the pattern to obtain the right cast-on number.
