Passover Hat Knitting Pattern

Passover Hat Knitting Pattern by Sierra and Pine.

This pattern is mind-boggling by its simplicity, yet the finished look is sophisticated. The inspiration for this pattern comes from a stitch I saw used in a pattern. Becoming obsessed with the said stitch I began to think about how great it would look as the main stitch in a cowl. Of course, after that, I had to make a matching hat so I could have a nice set. The repetitive nature of the stitch pattern makes it soothing to the soul, and the short 2 rounds repeats mean it’s easy to remember (hello, TV knitting).

It is knit in the round from the bottom up. It's an easy hat with a traditional 2X2 ribbing, followed by a side braid, then a simple 2 rounds repeat reverse cross stitch until the decrease for the crown. This hat is youth and adult sized and is offered in 4 different sizing options. I recommend using a yarn that has a lot of lust and depth, to get the best out of the pattern. Indie-dyed yarns are best suited to make this pattern shine. This pattern was professionally tech edited.

Notions you need to know: Casting on, knitting and purling, knitting and purling through the back loop, knitting 2 together through the back loop, passing stitches over, placing markers, decreasing, binding of.

Finished hat measurements

16.5” (18”, 19.5”, 22”) / 42 cm (46 cm, 49.5 cm, 56 cm) circumference, 8-9 inches (20-22 cm) high from crown to base. Meant to be worn with 0-4” of negative ease.

MATERIALS:

- 55g (65g, 75g, 90g) of DK weight yarn
Shown here using Zen Garden Serenity DK (90/10 sw superfine merino/ cashmere | approx. 250 yards/100g) - (purple)  and Phydeaux Design Beurre DK (100% sw merino | approx. 231 yards / 100 grams) (green)

Needles: Size US 4 (3.5 mm) and US 6 (4 mm) circular needle (16” / 40 cm) ; set of DPNs or longer needle for magic loop

Other notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissor.

YARN SUBSTITUTION

You can substitute any DK weight yarn that will give you the required gauge using merino wool.  Preferred: 100% superwash Merino; Merino nylon blends (75%-25% / 90%-10%), Merino Cashmere Nylon blends, Merino Cashmere Silk (80%-10%-10%).

GAUGE

23 stitches and 36 rows = 4” / 10 cm in reverse cross stitch pattern on size US6 (4 mm) needles

Exact gauge is not completely crucial for this project. However, major discrepancies will result in a different yardage requirement and a completely different fit.
